Look beyond the number on the quote.

The details that make contractor estimates easier to compare.

Compare the work, not just the total

Two estimates can describe very different jobs. One may include preparation, materials, disposal, and finishing while another covers labor only. Put the scopes side by side and identify what each contractor has included, excluded, or left to be decided.

Look for specific quantities, product descriptions, and repair assumptions. If a quote uses an allowance for an undecided item, ask how choosing a different product affects the price.

Understand the people and process

Ask who will supervise the work, who your day-to-day contact will be, and whether subcontractors are involved. Discuss site access, working hours, protection of your property, and cleanup. These details influence the experience as much as the finished result.

Request relevant references and examples of similar work. Ask the contractor to explain which credentials and insurance apply to the job, and verify relevant information with the issuing organization or insurer. Local requirements vary, so consult the appropriate authority for your project.

Clarify changes before they happen

Repairs and renovations sometimes reveal conditions that were not visible when the estimate was prepared. Ask how the contractor will document an issue, explain options, and obtain your approval before changing the work or price.

Discuss payment milestones and what each milestone represents. Keep a written record of agreed changes, material selections, and schedule updates so that both sides are working from the same information.

Choose the proposal you can explain

The most useful proposal is one you understand. You should be able to explain what will be done, what it will cost under the stated assumptions, what could change, and who is responsible for each stage.

Ask questions until the differences between proposals are clear. The goal is a well-defined project with a professional whose experience and communication fit your needs.
